A Story for You
"An Apple, A Pear, A Plum, A Cherry"
Once there was a boy who lived in Alltime. When he was five years old, he went to school. In the summer her played with his friends. He liked the summer. He liked his friends, he liked school. But by the time he was seven, he did not like school. By the time he was eight, he did not like some of his friends. And by the time he was nine, he did not even like summer. One green and gold day, he went for a walk. By and by he came to a woods and went into it. There he sat in the dark and looked at the sunshine. As he was sitting there, an old man walked by. "Boy," said the old man, "why are you sitting in the dark?" "Because I am not happy," said the boy. "I see," said the old man and he sat down with the boy. "Why is it that you are not happy?" "I am not happy because I am stupid," said the boy. "And how do you know that you are stupid?" asked the old man. The boy looked out at the sunshine and said, "I know it because my little sister can read books that I cannot read. My friends can solve problems that I cannot solve. My teacher gives me papers and assignments and I cannot finish them. That is how I know." "Hmmm," said the old man, "and was your life always this way?" The boy thought back over his life and said, "no, when I was six I was happy most of the time. When I was seven, I was happy some of the time, When I was eight, I was happy a little bit of the time." "And now you are nine and you are not happy at all? asked the old man. "No I am not. My friends laugh at me and call me names. I get mad and hit them. But I hit them because they are right." The old man stood up and invited the boy to walk with him down a path. The path led to a farm. Here the old man stopped and asked, "what do you see here?" The boy looked at all the different trees and said quickly, "I see apple trees and cherry trees and pear trees and plum trees." "And which tree is best?" asked the old man. The boy began, "I like . . ." "No," interrupted the old man, "I did not ask which tree you LIKE best, I asked which tree IS best." The boy thought about all of the trees. "There is not one that is the best," he said at last. The old man stopped smiling, "but the cherry and plum trees have beautiful blossoms and you have to wait so long until the fall to get apples from the tree. The pear tree comes late in the year. Surely one of them has to be the best." The boy saw this was a test and said, "No, sir, they are all pretty in the spring. They all give us shade in the summer, and they all give us good things to eat." Then the old man smiled. "You have learned something." "What?" asked the boy. "That I will not tell you. That is for you to find out." And the old man walked slowly away. The boy stayed and looked at all the trees, and at last he smiled.

Ask a parent and a sibling to write down something they think is great about YOU. Then write down something you like about yourself. Hang it over your bed or on a wall where you can see it often. |
